People Spend 8.5 Hours a Day Staring At Screens

P

The Council For Research Excellence yesterday released a comprehensive study on what people essentially do with their time when it comes to video and media.

And what they found was the average person spends a little over 8 hours a day staring at screens; TV, mobile devices and computers.  In fact, between these devices, 61 minutes of that time is spent watching advertisements alone.

The study also exposed a common belief as being false; that “young” people spend more time in front of these devices than the more mature generation.  Turns out, viewership is nearly equal across all age groups…except the 45 to 54 age group, which spend on average an extra hour in front of screens.

And the age group of 35-44 spends more time on the Internet than any other age group.  An important lesson for old, salty business folks who still cling to the notion that the Internet is primarily used by teenagers with no money to spend.

But perhaps the most humorous finding (depending upon how you look at it) is that when individuals were asked to estimate how much time they spent in front of screens on a daily basis, over 25% of the respondents “underestimated the time spent by a substantial amount”.

The big lesson here is how the vast majority of people, knowingly or not, prefer to consume content.  They want to watch something on a screen (in fact print media lagged way behind…landing in 4th place in the study).

Something to consider if you have yet to delve into web video for your marketing or relationship building efforts.

  • Screen toaster looks interesting, sorry I’m posting this on the wrong bit, read about screen time! I try not to think how long I spend looking at my computer screen. ps I am well into the upper age bracket and beyond so it must get worse as you get older?
