Perhaps share your best practices with us!

I was wondering if there is a “stop” on either side (or a pan limit) so the subject can appear on the left or the right instead of being forced to remain centered. That would be a very excellent feature behind a green screen, or for a live presentation where you’d like to show the audience what you’re talking about. I couldn’t find the answer on the site; I was wondering if you knew.

I have uploaded video and photos previously to my iMac (intel) but am now getting message “because usb device was drawing too much…”. The dc cable is powering up camcorder and I have 2 batteries at 70/100%. I don’t get the message once I remove the the usb cable. I’ve tried:
1. using different usb cables (can’t find original one for HFS10)
2. changing usb ports, including rear
3. restarting computer
4. uploading on another iMac – same message

I will try contacting apple support, but thought you’d be worth a try too. Thanks.

You saved me again. I went through one of my sites and scrubbed some unused plugins and mistakenly deleted a plugin that was creating a light box for my YouTube videos. Of course, it was a couple years ago when I set it up and did not document anything.

By the way Flickr and Photobucket make an error. Is this an bug belonging you.

It won’t show on an iOS (iPhone/iPad) device. Those devices use Apple’s video player.

The embed code for the video automatically senses what device a viewer is using. If the user has a Flash enabled device (desktop, laptop, Android tablet, Android phone), the video is served using the JW Player…and if the connection is slow…the “Loading Video…” text will appear.

However, if the viewer is using an iOS device, the JW Player is skipped and HTML5 is used to deliver the video. And at that point the video player built into Apple devices takes over.

I automatically get a black screen for a few seconds. I realize the iphone is trying to load the video but it would be great to get the loading info in there.

Wish you did some more tutorials for Avid Studio. I purchased it, but the presenter doing the training videos puts me to sleep. The one video you did, was amazing. They should hire you. I mean, all these companies should hire you. You probably sell more of their products then their whole marketing team.

Have you ever tried Power Director? I’m only thinking of using it for some old .flv files (which it handles), as do to a hard drive crash, I lost my original master video files from a few years back.

I’ll be sticking with my dedicated photo and video editors, which together can do more, do it faster, work well even on my very ordinary laptop when I’m in the field, and all together cost less than half of what Adobe gets for Photoshop.

As always, great article Dave – an area in which we’ve all struggled. In the early days, I was using Camtasia running 800 pixels vertically. Most recently, I’ve reverted to my DLSR recording 1080p with a 46 inch monitor behind me to simultaneously display PowerPoint and animations (card play in my case).

My sense is that folks can view screen essentials on PPT slides okay (which are reinforcing my audio) yet on the second half of the video (playhead 12:00) the audience probably pops up the resolution (all the way to 1080 if they have the bandwidth and CPU/graphic) and/or increases the screen viewing size.

Of course, all of this is dependent on the nature of the content – whether or not the producer can/should expect the viewer to take an action to improve their viewing experience.

Of course, it helps having 2 monitors so I can keep working if need be.

The “large” screen option must be chosen first, then full screen to make this size look sharp. Otherwise, if users just hit full screen, it’s fuzzy.

To really determine if using the larger size (720 or higher), the question is, how are the majority or YouTube viewers choosing to view these type of screen-capture videos?

Are users ignoring the screen size option and just hitting full screen? We can’t assume anything without data from testing. With that said, if you don’t know the answer, instructions to do so should be provided at beginning of video (if the destination of your video tutorials are for YouTube only) and/or in the description.

I have to agree with Marlene…I personally recommend to use 720p which looks best in full screen on YouTube.

Now we are looking to a converter, so the changed powerpoint can run on
ipad, We know th way MP4, but we dont want to change in a video!

Second is just weirdness of the camera connect. I had 2 files. 1 MP4 and 1 MOV. Don’t know what I recorded the MP4 with but the MOV was an iPhone 4.

Nothing was working until I found a post that said to create a DCIM folder and put the files in that. I did and magically it half worked. IPAD saw the connecter, opened the folder but only showed the MP4….

This has nothing to do with the Avid app so I won’t boar you any further. Safe to say the Camera Kits is a bit temperamental.

If you can’t play the video on your iPad at all, the video is in a format not supported by the iPad. If you can but it doesn’t display in Avid Studio, my guess is it’s in a format not supported by Avid Studio.

Editing video on an iPad 1 is asking quite a bit though. My guess is that technically the software runs on an iPad 1 but it’s not that great of an idea to do it…and that Avid should have specified that an iPad 2 (and soon higher) is recommended.

One other question I do have with this though, and it may just be different on the 5D…

When I put it in video mode and have the remote slider in the lower position as you suggested, I stand in front of the camera and push the button. It takes a picture, but it doesn’t sound like it’s taking a pic, it’s very quiet and when I check the pic it’s taken, it hasn’t auto focussed on me.

I have to take it out of video mode, use the remote to take a pic which then auto focusses, and then go back to the camera to put it in video mode again.

Is that normal for a 5D?

I had this working with my Canon 5D Mk II, but it seems that it’s stopped working on me, and I can’t see what I’ve done differently.

I’ve changed the battery, so I know it’s not that.

Any idea why this would just stop working?

Cool product and perhaps this is something that we can use. As Dave said in the video, the hardest part is getting people to actually record the testimonial. That’s why I think sending something in the mail, would get more results.

Perhaps we can use our webCARD product which links to your system? It’s basically a USB device which plugs into a PC or MAC and takes the user directly to a link (no typing, or even opening up a browser). In direct mail we get about a 40% – 60% (no joke!) response rate.

We’re in 2012 now though, almost every computer or mobile device is equipped with a webcam, so I think it would make a lot of sense to source video testimonials out of your client base this way.

You could still provide an (online) gift certificate or something, to avoid that you’re sending around cameras but no one is using them.

Besides that, I’m also a strong believer in incentivising the user, but I think next to gifts, these days, social and gaming elements can play a major role in this.

The idea is great and I always appreciate what Dave shares.

You might also want to get yourself a short URL. For example, I have JimK.us. I use it for forwarding as well as a list of my websites.

I had a client to whom this happened, and it was a 4 month long ordeal involving the stealing of our video, flagging for copyright violation, and re-editing by a troll who didn’t like what the video presented. Once Google got a hold of his video, it was his that came up in a search engine, not ours (even thought we had tagged the heck out of it!)

In essence, it had the opposite effect that we wanted. I would advise *anyone* who has clients of this downside. Trolls are really quite rampant on Youtube. Restrict comments if you are concerned. Certainly this doesn’t happen to everyone, but it does happen.

Upshot – Google has sandboxed my video in it’s video search function. I’ll need to do some experimentation to find the “signal”.

I have the same video on both Youtube and my self-hosted website. I created an XML video sitemap for the latter, submitted it to Google Webmaster, was given the tick by them. However, when I do a search of Google Videos, my YouTube video comes out on top, but the self-hosted video is nowhere to be found. To see it, I have to go to the 51st (last) page of the search results where I see the following message.

“In order to show you the most relevant results, we have omitted some entries very similar to the 503 already displayed. If you like, you can repeat the search with the omitted results included.”

I go to the “omitted” results. And there it finally is!

If this is the case, that Google doesn’t like “duplicate” results, I’ll change the length of one video, use a different file name and avoid using the exact same meta tags.

Thanks for any help. My self-hosted video has been AWOL from Google’s video results for a year! I’m trying to untangle the reasons why.

I think you do some damage to your reputation when you mislead for any reason. Your statement about today’s headline, “The headline above is actually a bit misleading.” is my reason for writing.

You might get more eyeballs on your email, but those of us who are already subscribing to your newsletter would likely open and read it anyway. Why be intentionally misleading, even if you admit it right off, for any reason?

Your online reputation is like a nicely painted and clean car. A little scratch here and there becomes obvious and a focal point of the car.

But keep up your otherwise great work.

Just started using WordPress and see the massive potential there, too. So, I will continue using YouTube in a big way, and with HTML 5, now you can see the videos whether people are using an iPad or iPhone. This is a major perk for all your hard work.

I can create a video in a few minutes, get in onto YouTube, and continue promoting it via YouTube. I have videos with over 100,000 views. Of course that many people do not come to your website with one video, but I do get some major visitors each time I post videos, and will continue doing so.

Major Tip: Make sure to have more than one YouTube account, because if an account happens to get shut down because you mentioned the words “make money” somewhere, then you have the ability to continue with shop after you upload your videos once more. And yes, this will affect your websites hosting your embedded video. This is why I have my own video on my websites and bring in the traffic using YouTube video. It’s called “Smart Marketing” and the ability to use common sense. You should, too!

And I learned another lesson … If you set a schedule for videos,
have them out on that day. If they’re good enough, people will
come to expect them and look forward.
Look at the youtube phenomenon, Jenna Marbles. She regularly
gets 9 Million views on her videos. She’s armed with an outdated
mac, Imovie, the built-in microphone, some quick edits, but she’s
also a young, attractive, 25 year old blond and I have more mileage
on one shoe !

Brian is right about sitemaps for video. That’s the only effective way to let Google know that you have videos on your site.

Google doesn’t “see/read” video like it sees content. That’s why you need keywords and descriptions attached with your video content, whether it’s on a web page on your site or on YouTube or any video submission site.

As for Traffic…

Traffic is traffic no matter where you’re sending it. You can buy it, borrow it, attract it, or leverage it from others who already have and control traffic.

But you don’t want to just send traffic to a page with just a video without having the page optimized for the people you want to attract.

It helps to have your videos on a WordPress platform as there are lots of plug-ins on the market that are designed to help video posts/pages get ranked. In addition, Google loves WordPress.

A few tips for traffic generation:

Get backlinks to your page/site/video page by submitting content to other quality sites on the web and include a link pointing back to your page.

For example, this can be achieved with articles. Submit articles, related to your video page, to top article directories and in the resource (bio) box, provide a call to action for readers to visit your site to watch your video with more information, then include the link to that page.

You can also contribute useful information on top ranked / popular forums and blogs related to your niche and have a link or reference back to your site.

You can submit documents and PDF’s to ‘doc sites’ (like docstoc.com) that include useful content and link(s) back to your site. Make sure you optimize these submissions and your content with keyword-rich titles and descriptions to attract your target audience to these sites (just as you would on your own site).

You can also create press releases and news stories and submit them to PR sites online. See PRWeb.com

Or use a site like WebFire.com that has tools that make all of the above easy from one all-inclusive place (not affiliated with this site).

For some videos, however, I *do* use YouTube, and I have those videos monetized. Some get a lot of traffic. I average $20 a month with only a couple dozen quickly-made videos.

Some valid points but I think uploading your videos to youtube has alot of benefits then negatives as you can ask visitors to go back to your site for more information and if your lucky enough to have your video monetize then its a win win.

Video is the video and it demands the viewers attention as you need to look at the screen to see and you hold that person captive just like yours did today lol.

However, I have to disagree with your first reason why to never use YouTube for video hosting regarding businesses who see your site with YouTube videos.

You’re assuming that businesses looking to do business with websites are marketing savvy.

I believe that most businesses (and most non-business consumers) don’t have a clue about video hosting options. All they know is YouTube.

It would be extremely rare if a potential customer/visitor to someone’s site with YouTube video content would think “Hmmm, using YouTube. Don’t know if I want to do business with them”.

In fact, I believe most visitors (whether business visitors or other) would be impressed that the site is using video at all. And if the quality of the video and/or it’s message is good enough, whether or not it’s hosted on YouTube or not would be a moot point.

In addition, there are tools available to make YouTube videos appear very professional on your site… to the degree that the YouTube stamp is hardly noticed.

Just my 2 cents.

I just watched Dave’s video and noticed your questions. I can at least tell you that you can get your videos indexed in Google when they are self hosted by using a video site map. They are not as hard to create as they used to be and if you use WordPress there are plugins that will create them for you.

Once you have the video site map, submit it to Google with your webmaster tools and ping the page. That will at least get your videos indexed.

Getting traffic is a much longer conversation and maybe Dave can point you in the right direction.

All other cameras I mentioned in the list have external microphone inputs built into the camera.

In other words, comparing a NEX to competing M4T cameras from Olympus and Panasonic would confuse people a lot less than comparing one to a DSLR camera.

Amazon-dot-com just delivered my new AT 2020 USB microphone yesterday. Is there any way I can get it to work in Windows 98 using Audacity? Windows 98 is looking for a driver which doesn’t seem to be available even on the Windows 98 install disc. Is there any driver available as a freeware download off the Internet that would get the AT 2020 USB talking with the Windows 98?

If that doesn’t work, is there a way I can patch the USB mike cord into an analog cassette deck to record using some sort of USB to phono plug adapter? Do I need a $40 USB to analog converter box?

1: In Vegas 10 HD Plat. Studio when rendering a .mp4 file what settings works for WP blogs? Maybe there are some issues? For the file works outside WP and not inside (WP 3.2 + 3.3) I tried all CHMOD 755/777/644?

2: Where do I find the best digital backgrounds?
Could I just use a still picture (.jpg) behind my greenscreen recording? (what resolution is best for a 640×480 video (SD))?
But I surely would like a “digital” office and maybe some animated ones?
I am working with health and fitness so maybe you know some nice “healthy” backgrounds?

For video editing software, you should investigate Cyberlink’s PowerDirector 10 Ultra. I just received a copy and will be trying it shortly. The PC Magazine review last month said it was the fastest video editing software as far as rendering. Feature set is similar to Sony Vegas Movie and Avid Studio, which I have both. But the ability of PowerDirector to benefit from the video card graphics processing unit (GPU) appears to put it ahead of the others as far as rendering, which is what can really suck up time waiting.

Dave, would you consider looking at PowerDirector 10 and letting us know your perspective?

I actually just looked into Vimeo Pro, but find many, many users very upset with transcoding and loading time issues. I think they must be going through growing pains.

Video Rebel can use S3 or any CDN or server that offers FTP access. That includes Bitgravity.

So, is there a way to use VideoRebel with BitGravity? I hate to think I’ve wasted that money. It also sounds from your article that Vimeo Pro might be an even better deal.

I do have a question about the technique, though. You cropped pretty closely to your body while on a frame where your arms are in a lowered position. This of course will garbage-matte the light stand and green-screen frame out of the scene. But once the video progresses along to the point where you are raising your arms and extending them out from your sides, won’t they too be garbage-matted out of the scene?

BTW, I’m going against all conventional wisdom by creating 2 hour-long TV shows a week, which I upload to YouTube and also place on my website. Very small niche market — just went “international” with it 6 weeks ago, and it’s getting some amazing attention.

My view is that more and more people will turn to online on-demand video for their entertainment as more tablets, smartphones and smart TV’s are sold.

The format you’d want would probably be MP4, using a profile of “baseline” and level of “3″.

If you’re doing a bunch of web video that also needs to play on iPads, Kindle Fire, iPhones, etc., I highly recommend Dave’s very reasonably priced course on doing mobile video. He shows you how to create a single video format that plays on almost all devices as well as in web browsers – and it includes a thorough discussion of embed code, including HTML5′s tag. He doesn’t specifically discuss the Fire because it came out shortly after he authored this course, but the concepts would be the same.

Could you do one on using remote with a Canon camcorder like the M41? Thanks!

In trying out ‘Photo Soft Box’ an idea came to mind. Why not use Airplay to stream the image to another device, like the Apple TV? With iOS5 a mirror image is now possible on all apps.

I am now streaming the ‘Photo Soft Box’ image output to my flat panel tv through Airplay, still visible on the iPad. Then controlling the image characteristics with an iphone using the .99 cent companion app ‘PSB Remote.’ Two light sources controlled remotely at the camera.

You talked about 3 key things for Green Screening and I already made 2 mistakes.

You amaze me.

The biggest differences between Bitgravity and other CDN’s (like S3) are that first, Bitgravity was designed from the ground up only for video, and second, Bitgravity permanently stores copies of your videos on their edge servers…while S3 only caches requested videos on their edge servers for about 72 hours (then it removes them). It only re-caches them when they get requested again.

So with Bitgravity, viewers always get a video served to them from a server closest to them…while with S3, depending on how popular a video is and the last time it was viewed, the video usually has to travel from the origin server to the edge server.

This is something people aren’t aware of with S3 and Cloudfront. Yes, your videos get delivered from edge servers, but if the video hasn’t been viewed in 72 hours or whatever, it has to travel from the origin server (S3) to the edge server (Cloudfront) before it is viewed. That’s an extra step that can cause playback issues.

Sorry, perhaps my question was a bit obtuse. What I was trying to say is that the TIME TO UPLOAD (throughput) is lightning fast on Amazon S3 servers as is download with its cached download infrastructure. As a simple surrogate, I was just curious on the upload throughput (Megabits per second) to the new vimeo servers.

I’d guess their servers and internet “pipes/routers” would be fine for a handful of simultaneous views but would be a problem for those of us like you who send out EMAILs to thousands of customers that result in a large number of simultaneous downloads the first few hours after notification.

I just bought the Flip HD camera and find the video is not choppy on my desktop, but it is on my laptop. I’ve learned through the stream of responses to your video that my camera shoots in an MP4 format, and I realize the AVCHD software won’t help me. Is there a format I should convert to that would ensure smooth playback in emails or on DVD for sharing with family and friends that won’t result in choppy playback while retaining the HD quality? I really appreciate your advice.

I have a Samsung S10 Full HD camcorder. I shot the videos and went to my computer to edit them…Lagging, choppy, and out of sync. I made sure it wasn’t in AVCHD format. My files are in .MP4. I can upload the video to YouTube and it plays fine, perfect. Thing is, I need to edit.”

Someone has posted this statement and i am the exact same boat. I have the same camcorder the samsung q10 and use sony vegas hd 10 platnium to edit. The video is so choppy and cant see video and even audio chops up. I tried what you suggested and switched to draft but its still choppy. I have a asus g50v series laptop so its not lack of a powerful laptop. My flip camera records the same file and i have no problems with it when i edit. I have exhausted my options and am ready to pull out my hair. PLease help

Plus, with Vimeo, and other sharing site, you don’t have final control over the videos. If they go under (I doubt they would but you never know) all your videos will be lost.

And, yeah, Dave kicks serious ass week in and week out so the people crying about a teaser video need to head off to Burger King where they do it there way.

The path `/usr/bin/ffmpeg` is the default location for FFMPEG library and not the location to upload videos. Video upload location path is inside the `wp-content` folder of your WordPress installation.

I have been dubbing you Dave “The Quality Guy” Kaminski, and have been doing so for awhile now, but I don’t think I have every told you. My jaw-dropped when you revealed you were using a $250 camcorder in that video. I still like my DSLR though. I wish I had the Panasonic GH2 like you though.

I’ve been using Sony Vegas Movie Studio HD Pro Platinum Awesome Purple Box Long Name Software and have since switched computers since my last editing. And, am a little put off having mulitple files for each video you edit with Vegas.

I like vegas, it’s just rather daunting thinking about it. And, firing it up to find all the files and work with them.

That said, the lower-priced cameras can provide great video. They are mainly menu-driven. You have to be patient and work with them a little more than you would a pro level camera with a higher price and more options.

I was thinking of buying a new pc with Windows 7
to run Avid, based on this review and seeing how
the new Mac Final Cut Pro turned out to be a dog
and not very user friendly.

I couldn’t get the beam splitter glass, but I got my glass from a picture frame shop, as the glass they use is very light, and it worked brilliantly.

I also put the glass inside the lid rather than outside, for more mirrored area.

I used a double-tiered music keyboard stand to put the “Teleprompter” on instead of a lightstand, so it wasn’t quite as versatile but it all worked a treat.

It does look as though FCP X is a serious competitor to Avid Studio, except of course that it’s $130 more expensive. But for filmmakers, you can’t send a project file to collaborating editors, nor can you link your video files to a common separate driver or server, they say (the reviewers).

If anyone has a workaround to use it with S3 it would be great if they’d post how.

Overall, I really like the product, but find myself falling back to Sony Vegas Mov Studio 10 sometimes for projects where I want a lot of titles because Sony Vegas is what I cut my teeth on, what I’m familiar with.

I have also recently bought a latest generation Macbook Pro i7 2.7GHz laptop with 8GB ram and equipped with a SATA III SSD + a second hybrid Momento XT hard drive.

Big question is should I buy Avid Studio for my PC, or wait and then get FCP Xpress when that comes out? Ignore portability advantage of the MacBook Pro. (I am leaning towards the Avid Studio, but so many people are raving about FCP).

The quality of the 7d is real good, but sometimes I get frustrated with trying to focus it. It might look pretty focused when I take a trial video to test it, but then when I’m done and put it on my big screen computer. It ends of being not as focused as I thought. Thanks ahead of time if you answer
