WVU #23 – Creating PhotoShop-Like Effects With Video
With digital photos, you’ve always been able to edit out bad spots…replacing those spots with something more attractive. But what most people don’t know, is that you can do the same thing with video.
For example, maybe you’re in real estate and have a video showing the outside of a house. But in the video the sky is cloudy…and you’d like to make it a brilliant blue with flowing clouds.
With video editing software, you can do this through something called masking. And in this week’s tip, I show you how to quickly and easily do masking in Sony Vegas.

Hi Dave
Can masking be done in Final Cut?
Thanks
Yes, but it’s not the same as in Vegas (Vegas has the pen tool that allows multiple points).
In Final Cut, there’s the 8 point garbage matte, that allows you to select 8 points and size the selected area.
To be able to select more points (like the multiple clicks I showed in the Vegas video), you’ll need to get a plugin. Some are free…some are not…here’s a free one:

The type of masking I show in the Vegas video can also be done (to a certain extent) in Motion 3.
Hi Dave
I really like that fact that you’ve put the latest video in the series at the top of the site.
I makes much more sense to put it front and centre so that people know exactly what they need to do when they get here.
You’re one of the very few people that I subscribe to because you always come out with stuff that interests me. I’ve recently removed myself from a lot of mailing lists that provide little to no value but, like I said…yours isn’t one of them.
I look forward to receiving your latest tips and tutorials every week. You seem like one of the good guys that genuinely try to help people.

Hi Dave
I recently bought a new marketing program that is 100% video downloaded from the net and was curious how in the world they were able to have video in video? The Program Director is talking in one section (it is a video rectangle inside of the overall video like picture in picture), where they are pointing out something else in the larger viewing area.
Would masking be the way to do this?
I found the way the videos were made to be very professional because you never lose sight of the the instructor and can easily follow what they are saying and doing.
By the way, Anyone reading this needs to take Dave’s video course!!!!!! Outstanding course and the best money on any educational product I have ever spent!!
Look forward to seeing more great things from you Dave!
Thanks For The Excellent Info!
Jim
Jim,
Picture-in-picture effects are easily done in any video editing software.
You just have two video tracks (one on top of the other…each containing individual clips) and then for the top track you use cropping to reduce the size of the clip.
Thanks for the compliments.
