When it comes to using green screens with video, most people think in terms of the TV weather person, where they stand in front of a big green screen and replace the entire background with something else. But there’s another technique that can be far simpler and even more effective. I share the technique in this video.

Green poster board? Really?
Green, or any other solid color you want to chroma key. The material being used doesn’t matter, as long as the color is solid and even. Green and blue work best because they are the least like skin tones. Get more info at http://bit.ly/dchp2X
Ok mr teaser. this is too cool. I quess Imma hafta try to make one of these myself. I hope someone has a how-to floating around out here. Thanks for this
Search for “green screen” on YouTube and you’ll find lots of instructional videos. It’s not hard at all. For cheap and fast, just buy some green poster board and tape it together. You can also cut the posterboard/cardboard into different shapes to make things even more interesting.
Great stuff, Dave. How do you get the video into the green screen?
Thanks
Search for “chroma key” in the help of your video editing software for detailed instructions…or google it, like “how to chroma key in sony vegas.” Although the way to chroma key varies slightly depending on the software you use, the process is essentially the same across products. You key a color and the software makes it transparent. Any photo or video behind the keyed layer will show through.
@Joseph – It’s done through chroma keying and keyframing.
Where can I get that new iPad? lol
I think Dave’s selling them. But most people are disappointed to open the box and find a big sheet of green cardboard inside.
This is your best tip so far. Keep it up you are great. Your course was great when I get more hands on under my belt I may be back.

Nifty tip! I hadn’t thought of that. I have a giant piece of green painting tarp that I hang behind myself for video… need to hide the messy office. Ha!
Gonna have to put this to use. Thanks!
Great tip Dave! I am thinking why it did not occur to me.
Nice touch, Dave. I’ll be tuning in again after that one.
Great video, question. How are you embedding the secondary video into a moving object like the ipad? Thanks
@Chuck – This is done with keyframing. I cover it extensively in my paid training at http://www.webvideouniversity.com
Dave, you’re a bloody genius! Thanks for always sharing.

Dave, great video!
How do you get the video to stay within the green screen card when you move it?
Thanks
Mike

Only you Dave … Can come up with the most practical,
ingenious, creative video tips ….. unfreaken believeable !
I’m telling you … You have a core group of fans that
would pay to here you speak live …. Maybe some of your
inspiration would rub off on us.
This short video just gave me a million ideas for
producing some new videos …. duh … it takes a lot of thinking
outside the box … if you could use a full green screen ..
then maybe you can use a section …..
Darnn … I could even have me looking out
my window into my neighbors window …
and with green screen … I can add …..
well … let me change the subject and keep
this PG !
Thanks again Dave …. You’re AMAZING !
Dave….That is really cool! It kinda of like pulling the curtain back on the Wizard of Oz..one more mystery revealed! It does open many cool effects that I would never thought of. Your the best! Thanks!
Wow Dave,
Very cool! You just added to our bag of tricks. Thanks so much..
Mike
Nice – love the whole concept!
I also like the monkey at the top of the ledge in your office hehehe…
Gideon
Impressive Dave… Especially the techie green screen that was believable!
Fantastic tip Dave. Once again you da man!!! I Did take your course and anyone who is remotely interested in playing with video needs to take your course. I think I need a refresher because in your course, you talked about how green screening in Vegas Pro had some quirks. Sadly I don’t remember what they were. Could you please create a short video to remind us about the keyframing?
Great example of using a green card for an oversized iPad. Very fun.
Great stuff. This was one of your better podcasts in my humble opinion. I especially liked the wind noise you added (or seemed to add) to the car driving clip – as if the window was open.
That is so cool!! Thanks for sharing, I think it’s neat how creative one can get using the green screen.
Another awesome video Dave! Great use of chromakeying, the “Gpad” trick was unique, although I liked them all, I have never seen that one before.
