I Can’t Get This @!*%$^!!! Video Player To Work – WVU #95
When people want to put videos on their web site, without using video sharing sites, they usually get very frustrated with video players. And rightfully so, because video players can be a pain to configure and use. I’ve shared some tips on how to make this easier in the past. However in this video, I share what might be the easiest, no-cost solution yet.

Basic Video Player

dave, i bought your video player but haven’t used it yet. do you prefer this one or yours. doesn’t matter to me just asking.
@Alan – They are apples and oranges. This is just a basic video player to make things simple for people…it doesn’t include sharing features, video ads, email subscriptions, etc. like the Versa Player.
Dave – How did you know that I spent the entire morning researching video players…? Timing is perfect; thanks for this great resource!
Dave this is great! Thanks for showing the demo and sharing this with us. Can’t wait to try it out!
Hey Dave,
Great player but doesn’t solve the problem of getting the video online somewhere first and then creating the player.
I have been using something called http://TryEasyWebVideo.com which does it all from conversion, player settings to posting to the web.
The software is free with unlimited hosting for $10/month.
Cheers,
michael
Once again Dave, you’ve provided us with another fabulous resource! Thanks so much for all the work you do!!
I cannot get a youtube video to play.
Dave, I also tried a video on Viddler (Youtube also) and it does not work either. Am I doing something wrong?
@Jack – It can’t be used to play videos from sharing sites.
Hey Dave,
Any way to get this this player to work with RTMP?
Dan
@Dan – It does work with RTMP.
Hi Dave,
I love your site, it has helped me learn a great deal more about web video then I knew before. I even bought the T2I on your review and LOVE IT. I am a Drupal developer and usually have to set up these players by hand, which can be a big pain especially for smaller sites that don’t need all the bells and whistles. The question that I have is who is hosting the video player for this site (basic video player)? Will it be around years from now or do you suggest installing it locally even on smaller clients sites.
Thanks again for all the useful information!
@Joel – The player is hosted by Adobe or you can host it yourself…everything you need is on the Open Source Media Framework site…http://osmf.org
Dave,
As always great stuff.
One question though…what happened to your right eye from about 1:00 to 1:05 in the interview with Gideon?
My first thought was some video Shenanigans…but after watching it again I’m not so sure.
Best to you and your eye!
Scott
Thanks Dave, absolutely what I wanted and was looking for. The video looks great and simplicity in itself getting it to play.
I couldn’t however get the jpeg image to show I uploaded it to my server and put in images file and copied the url to clipboard but it doesn’t show. The video is on amazon s3 but the image is on my server, would it be that that is making the issue or is it something else?
Thank you
Elaine
Dave,
I absolutely appreciate the fantastic detail you provide. Your communication style makes things easy to understand. This player is a very big help for me… however, I’m stuck on a basic element of video editing.
I’m using a Sony FS2000 – shooting at 16:9 in High quality.
No matter how I bring the file to my PC, when I bring it into Sony Vegas Platinum, it shows up in a 4:3 ratio.
Is there a setting or settings I should pay attention to when setting up the Sony Vegas project?
I just want to set it up exactly like your videos – at 640×360 with the resolution you are getting on the clips here.
Looking for some guidance or point me to a resource that I can check to make sure I’m setting things up correctly.
I’d really appreciate any help you can provide…
Wayne
@Wayne – I cover these things in my paid training at http://www.webvideouniversity.com
Ahhhh…thats why it was taking to long to cache your video today
It wasnt your standard host…funny I thought S3 would have been faster.
Geoff
This is so fantastic and really a help to me. For those that havent figured out s3 yet it’s quite amazing and well worth the relatively easy learning curve to get and use an account. This makes it way easier than it was 15 mins ago
Many Thanks for sharing this one!
Thanks Dave that makes a whole bunch of stuff much faster.
Just tried this and it didn’t work for me…
I got an error message that said “We are unable to connect to the content you’ve requested. We apologize for the inconvenience.”
Maybe it doesn’t work with vids hosted on my WP site…???
@Mommy Reporter – You’ll want to check the URL you entered for your video…put that URL in your browser’s address bar first to make sure it’s valid…if it is, you should either see or be prompted to download the video. And if it is valid, it should work fine with the player. An example of your video URL would be something like this:
http://mywebsite.com/myvideo.flv
Thanks Dave!! I appreciate your help!!
Great resource…. love your expanded player too.
I had the same problem as MommyReporter above. I was hosting the flv file in a directory on my self-hosted WordPress blog and kept getting the “unable to connect to the content” error messaage when trying to use the basic video player. Solution: I published the flv file to a directory on another non-Wordpress website I own and put that URL into the video player. Problem solved. After that I had no problem with the basic video player finding the file and playing it. Then I embedded the code into my WordPress blog and it worked great.
WordPress is a great blog platform, but it’s not for those without patience and perseverance…
Very interesting website.
I have two questions for you.
1- Where can I find information on Versa Player.
2-I’m now using movie maker and frontpage to put my videos on my websites (commercial real estate) but I want to change.
What software do you suggest for making my websites and editing and embedding videos.
PS I’m working with a PC but I’m also thinking of buying a mac; so I’d like to know what is the best software for what I want to do.
Thanks in advance, Henri
@Henri – The Versa Player is no longer for sale. We recommend Dreamweaver and Sony Vegas for Windows users, Dreamweaver and Final Cut for Mac users.
