{"id":143,"date":"2008-11-21T11:21:34","date_gmt":"2008-11-21T15:21:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/webvideouniversity.com\/blog\/?p=143"},"modified":"2008-11-21T11:21:34","modified_gmt":"2008-11-21T15:21:34","slug":"generation-youtube-youtube-becomes-worlds-second-largest-search-engine","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/webvideouniversity.com\/blog\/2008\/11\/21\/generation-youtube-youtube-becomes-worlds-second-largest-search-engine\/","title":{"rendered":"Generation YouTube &#8211; YouTube Becomes World&#8217;s Second Largest Search Engine"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I read an article last week from a well-known marketing expert that stated the Internet is no more powerful than any other marketing medium.\u00a0 Or in other words, the Internet, direct mail, television and magazine advertising are all equal&#8230;and should all be used together&#8230;instead of focusing on just one.<\/p>\n<p>And I agree&#8230;at least on <em>this day<\/em> of <em>this year<\/em>.\u00a0 I may not agree next year.\u00a0 And I definitely won&#8217;t agree several years from now.<\/p>\n<p>Why?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Because of Generation YouTube<\/strong>.\u00a0 Kids and teenagers these days are growing up in a totally different environment than us &#8220;adults&#8221; did.\u00a0 They communicate online or via text messaging almost exclusively.\u00a0 They rarely speak on the phone, they don&#8217;t write letters, they don&#8217;t read magazines, they watch TV shows from their computers and they have no interest in anything that arrives in the mail (at least as far as I can tell).<\/p>\n<p>And web video is playing a big part of this.\u00a0 After all, why read through pages of text when you can click a button and <em><strong>watch<\/strong><\/em> what you want to know in seconds.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Watch any kid surf the Internet and what you see will surprise you; they use YouTube as a search engine<\/strong>.\u00a0 It doesn&#8217;t matter what they&#8217;re looking for&#8230;help with math, a video game or a person; they want to find the answer in a video.\u00a0 And on the occasion when they do use Google for something&#8230;they still type in &#8220;YouTube&#8221; in their search phrase so they can get a video-based result.<\/p>\n<p><strong>I&#8217;m not making this up. <\/strong> In fact, YouTube has already become the world&#8217;s second largest search engine behind Google.\u00a0 Yes, <em>YouTube<\/em>.\u00a0 And many pundits are predicting that it will overtake Google over the next several years.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" style=\"vertical-align: middle;\" src=\"http:\/\/webvideouniversity.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/11\/youtube_google_nov08c.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"610\" height=\"248\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I have no doubt it will.\u00a0 Eventually.\u00a0 So am I suggesting you give up on all traditional, text-based forms of marketing and start going with web video exclusively?\u00a0 No.<\/p>\n<p>What I&#8217;m suggesting is you start adding web video to the mix now&#8230;in increasingly heavy doses.\u00a0 Whatever business you&#8217;re in&#8230;whatever market you&#8217;re in&#8230;eventually your audience will be today&#8217;s teenagers&#8230;all grown up.\u00a0 And as any of us with kids know, it happens a lot faster than you could ever imagine.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I read an article last week from a well-known marketing expert that stated the Internet is no more powerful than any other marketing medium.\u00a0 Or in other words, the Internet, direct mail, television and magazine advertising are all equal&#8230;and should all be used together&#8230;instead of focusing on just one.
