{"id":2291,"date":"2011-05-02T10:57:31","date_gmt":"2011-05-02T14:57:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/webvideouniversity.com\/blog\/?p=2291"},"modified":"2011-05-02T10:57:31","modified_gmt":"2011-05-02T14:57:31","slug":"the-3-biggest-mistakes-people-make-with-web-video","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/webvideouniversity.com\/blog\/2011\/05\/02\/the-3-biggest-mistakes-people-make-with-web-video\/","title":{"rendered":"The 3 Biggest Mistakes People Make With Web Video"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>There can be a lot of reasons why people won&#8217;t watch your videos on the web, won&#8217;t watch them all the way through or won&#8217;t take the action you&#8217;re hoping for at the end of your video.\u00a0  But there are three big mistakes that people make with their videos again and again.\u00a0  Here they are.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Bad Green Screen<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>It seems just about everyone who starts with web video wants to do green screen.\u00a0 I always advise against it.\u00a0 But hardly anyone listens.\u00a0 Why do I advise against it?\u00a0 It&#8217;s because if you don&#8217;t light, shoot and edit green screen video properly, it will end up looking completely fake.\u00a0 And instead of people thinking you have a fancy studio or office, they&#8217;ll think&#8230;well&#8230;<em>you&#8217;re fake<\/em>.\u00a0 And that&#8217;s not a good thing.<img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-2294\" title=\"blog_bad_gs\" src=\"http:\/\/webvideouniversity.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/blog_bad_gs.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/webvideouniversity.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/blog_bad_gs.png 400w, https:\/\/webvideouniversity.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/blog_bad_gs-300x168.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Especially on the web where people want to connect with people on a transparent level, not what people pretend to be, but what they&#8217;re really like.\u00a0 That&#8217;s why a simple video of someone sitting in their office can often be far more effective than green screen video.\u00a0 It&#8217;s real.\u00a0 It&#8217;s genuine.\u00a0 And that&#8217;s what people want on the web (where it&#8217;s so easy for people to pretend to be something they&#8217;re not).<\/p>\n<p>That doesn&#8217;t mean green screen video should never be used.\u00a0 It certain situations it can be a good choice&#8230;especially if it&#8217;s lit, shot and edited correctly.\u00a0 But doing it just to look cool or to try and impress people is often a bad choice.\u00a0 And doing it when your green screen video looks bad&#8230;is always a bad choice.\u00a0 Always.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Bad Audio<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Audio is actually a more important part of video, than video itself.\u00a0 Statistically, people will watch a video with good audio longer than they&#8217;ll watch a video with bad audio.\u00a0 That&#8217;s because, as much as it might disappoint you, peoples eyes aren&#8217;t glued to your video from beginning to end.\u00a0 They aren&#8217;t always watching, but they are always listening.<img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-2292\" title=\"blog_bad_audio\" src=\"http:\/\/webvideouniversity.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/blog_bad_audio.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/webvideouniversity.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/blog_bad_audio.png 400w, https:\/\/webvideouniversity.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/blog_bad_audio-300x168.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Sometimes the audio is too low.\u00a0 That can be easily corrected.\u00a0 Sometimes there is background noise.\u00a0 That needs to be addressed before you actually shoot the video.\u00a0 And sometimes people rely on their camera&#8217;s built-in microphone, which almost always produces less than stellar audio (and can be instantly fixed by using an external microphone with a camera).<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m often surprised at how little attention people spend on their audio.\u00a0 Most times, their focus is only on what their video looks like.\u00a0 And remember, especially if your videos last more than a couple minutes, that people aren&#8217;t always watching&#8230;but they are always listening.\u00a0 You don&#8217;t need to spend a fortune on audio either.\u00a0 Often for less than $100 you can achieve so called &#8220;studio quality&#8221; audio.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Bad Script or No Script<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Ever watch a video that rambles on and on?\u00a0 Where it takes the person 10 minutes to show something that should have taken 30 seconds?\u00a0 Of course you have.\u00a0 That&#8217;s how most videos are on the web.\u00a0 Unscripted.\u00a0 And it&#8217;s not a good thing, as statistically, web videos are only watched for about 2 minutes.\u00a0 That means you really need to get your point across in a hurry.<img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-2293\" title=\"blog_bad_script\" src=\"http:\/\/webvideouniversity.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/blog_bad_script.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/webvideouniversity.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/blog_bad_script.png 400w, https:\/\/webvideouniversity.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/blog_bad_script-300x168.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Imagine if the TV news person wasn&#8217;t reading from a teleprompter and instead was just saying whatever came to mind.\u00a0 It would be a rambling mess and the news show would take hours.\u00a0 That&#8217;s why scripts are followed.\u00a0 They allow you to get information across in a concise and meaningful format.\u00a0 And within a certain time frame.<\/p>\n<p>With web video, that doesn&#8217;t mean you need to use a teleprompter.\u00a0 It doesn&#8217;t even mean that you need to write down beforehand what you&#8217;re going to say.\u00a0 But at the very least, you&#8217;re going to need some type of script in your head.\u00a0 Some idea, rehearsed in your head, of what you&#8217;re going to say.\u00a0 And it wouldn&#8217;t be a bad idea to time out how long that &#8220;head script&#8221; is going to take.<\/p>\n<p>Plus remember, it&#8217;s video.\u00a0 You can edit it.\u00a0 That means you can cut stuff out to make your video more concise.\u00a0 That&#8217;s what they do in Hollywood.\u00a0\u00a0 When you watch a typical 60 minute show on TV, it&#8217;s actually only around 40\u00a0 minutes or so to allow for commercials.\u00a0 But that 40 minute show often starts out with 8-10 hours worth of footage.\u00a0 Only the best stuff that makes sense for the final product is kept.\u00a0 The rest is cut out.\u00a0 And you never know the difference.\u00a0 Do the same thing with web video (cut out the stuff that isn&#8217;t absolutely critical in getting your point across) and your audience will never know the difference either.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>There can be a lot of reasons why people won&#8217;t watch your videos on the web, won&#8217;t watch them all the way through or won&#8217;t take the action you&#8217;re hoping for at the end of your video.\u00a0 But there are three big mistakes that people make with their videos again and again.\u00a0 Here they are.
