{"id":322,"date":"2009-05-20T09:48:54","date_gmt":"2009-05-20T13:48:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/webvideouniversity.com\/blog\/?p=322"},"modified":"2009-05-20T09:48:54","modified_gmt":"2009-05-20T13:48:54","slug":"new-study-reveals-how-people-actually-view-your-web-site","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/webvideouniversity.com\/blog\/2009\/05\/20\/new-study-reveals-how-people-actually-view-your-web-site\/","title":{"rendered":"New Study Reveals How People Actually View Your Web Site"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I teach my students at Web Video University a very specific way to design and layout their web sites.\u00a0 This is done to ensure that the maximum number of visitors turn into customers.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The techniques I teach aren&#8217;t based on theory or opinion<\/strong>.\u00a0 Rather, they are based on my years of experience in direct response graphic design&#8230;and&#8230;in operating dozens and dozens of web sites.<\/p>\n<p>And while these techniques <strong>will<\/strong> convert the maximum number of visitors into customers, they don&#8217;t always produce the best looking web sites.\u00a0 Which is why a fair number of people are hesitant to use them.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Well, Eyetrack III has released a new study that may make these people reconsider<\/strong>.\u00a0 By the way, I found this study through <a href=\"http:\/\/www.problogger.net\/archives\/2009\/05\/20\/11-striking-findings-from-an-eye-tracking-study\/\" target=\"_blank\">ProBlogger<\/a>, who found it through <a href=\"http:\/\/www.directcreative.com\/blog\/eye-tracking-websites\" target=\"_blank\">Direct Creative Blog<\/a>.\u00a0 So props to them.<\/p>\n<p>While the study results don&#8217;t surprise me (as they confirm classic direct response tactics), they do illustrate in a statistical sense where people&#8217;s eyes go and what they do once they land on your site.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Here are a few highlights from the report:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Dominant headlines draw the eyes first on a page<\/li>\n<li>Headlines capture the eye for about a second, so you better make your words count<\/li>\n<li>Shorter paragraphs, broken up frequently, perform better than long paragraphs<\/li>\n<li>Text advertising holds attention almost 5 times longer than image advertising<\/li>\n<li>One-column web sites perform better than multiple-column sites<\/li>\n<li>Text should deliver facts and images should illustrate concepts<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>There&#8217;s actually much more than this to the report and it&#8217;s an interesting read.\u00a0 To see the full text of the report, just <a href=\"http:\/\/www.poynterextra.org\/eyetrack2004\/main.htm\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>click here<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I teach my students at Web Video University a very specific way to design and layout their web sites.\u00a0 This is done to ensure that the maximum number of visitors turn into customers.
