{"id":407,"date":"2009-08-19T00:08:06","date_gmt":"2009-08-19T04:08:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/webvideouniversity.com\/blog\/?p=407"},"modified":"2009-08-19T00:08:06","modified_gmt":"2009-08-19T04:08:06","slug":"does-the-size-of-your-mailing-list-or-the-number-of-friends-you-have-on-social-networking-sites-really-matter","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/webvideouniversity.com\/blog\/2009\/08\/19\/does-the-size-of-your-mailing-list-or-the-number-of-friends-you-have-on-social-networking-sites-really-matter\/","title":{"rendered":"Does The Size of Your Mailing List or The Number of Friends You Have On Social Networking Sites Really Matter?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Many people have an obsession over the number of subscribers they have on their mailing list, the number of people they have subscribed to their blog or the number of friends they have on social networking sites.<\/p>\n<p>But do these numbers really matter?<\/p>\n<p>Marketing guru <strong>Seth Godin<\/strong> says no.\u00a0 He recently caused a bit of a stir by posting a video on his blog explaining why having a large number of friends or followers is essentially worthless.\u00a0 You can see the video below:<\/p>\n<p><object width=\"560\" height=\"340\"><param name=\"movie\" value=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/r0h0LlCu8Ks&#038;hl=en&#038;fs=1&#038;\"><\/param><param name=\"allowFullScreen\" value=\"true\"><\/param><param name=\"allowscriptaccess\" value=\"always\"><\/param><embed src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/r0h0LlCu8Ks&#038;hl=en&#038;fs=1&#038;\" type=\"application\/x-shockwave-flash\" allowscriptaccess=\"always\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" width=\"560\" height=\"340\"><\/embed><\/object><\/p>\n<p><strong>My take on this? <\/strong> It depends on what you&#8217;re trying to do.<\/p>\n<p>If for example you&#8217;re trying to sell stuff to people (which most people are), then I agree with Seth 100%.\u00a0 Quality is far more important then quantity when it comes to selling.<\/p>\n<p>For instance, in the offline world, you can buy mailing lists for virtually any market you want.\u00a0 But a list with 1,000 names who have purchased something through direct mail in the past 30 days is far more valuable then a list of 50,000 people who have sent in a warranty card for something (and you can bet that 1,000 name list is far more expensive too).<\/p>\n<p>In the online world, I&#8217;ve seen lists with 1,500 names outperform lists with 100,000 names&#8230;and I&#8217;ve seen it more than once.\u00a0 Why does this happen?\u00a0 Because the people on the list with 1,500 names have an established relationship with the sender&#8230;while there has been no relationship developed with the people on the 100,000 name list.<\/p>\n<p>Again, when it comes to selling, quality is more important than quantity.\u00a0 Then again, like with all things, opinions vary.<\/p>\n<p>So I&#8217;m curious&#8230;what&#8217;s your opinion on this topic?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Many people have an obsession over the number of subscribers they have on their mailing list, the number of people they have subscribed to their blog or the number of friends they have on social networking sites.
