{"id":532,"date":"2009-10-12T09:48:29","date_gmt":"2009-10-12T13:48:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/webvideouniversity.com\/blog\/?p=532"},"modified":"2009-10-12T09:48:29","modified_gmt":"2009-10-12T13:48:29","slug":"how-a-15000-movie-made-7-million-in-2-days","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/webvideouniversity.com\/blog\/2009\/10\/12\/how-a-15000-movie-made-7-million-in-2-days\/","title":{"rendered":"How a $15,000 Movie Made $7 Million In 2 Days"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Last weekend the movie <em><strong>Paranormal Activity<\/strong><\/em> officially opened.\u00a0 It was the #5 earning movie for the weekend in the U.S., bringing in a little over $7 million in ticket sales.<\/p>\n<p>Nothing is really unusual about that.<\/p>\n<p>Except however, that <em>Paranormal Activity<\/em> appeared in only 160 theaters&#8230;a fraction of the normal number of theaters movies are released in.\u00a0 And oh yea, <em>Paranormal Activity<\/em> was made for just <strong>$15,000<\/strong> (a small budget for the typical Hollywood movie is around $20 million).<\/p>\n<p>The movie was originally made in a raw, point-and-shoot style by an independent film maker (think web video style).\u00a0 It was aquired by DreamWorks under the assumption that they would re-shoot it under a big budget Hollywood format.\u00a0 But then they decided to leave it as-is.<\/p>\n<p>A clever marketing campaign that included Facebook and Twitter followed, building up word-of-mouth advertisting&#8230;which led to it&#8217;s huge opening weekend.<\/p>\n<p>The lesson?\u00a0 Well, once again it&#8217;s proof that you don&#8217;t need expensive equipment or a lot of money to strike it big with video&#8230;whether your videos are online or off.\u00a0 You just need an idea and the discipline to take action on it.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Last weekend the movie Paranormal Activity officially opened.\u00a0 It was the #5 earning movie for the weekend in the U.S., bringing in a little over $7 million in ticket sales.
