{"id":932,"date":"2010-02-08T10:50:24","date_gmt":"2010-02-08T14:50:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/webvideouniversity.com\/blog\/?p=932"},"modified":"2010-02-08T10:50:24","modified_gmt":"2010-02-08T14:50:24","slug":"canon-to-introduce-new-hd-video-format-and-camera","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/webvideouniversity.com\/blog\/2010\/02\/08\/canon-to-introduce-new-hd-video-format-and-camera\/","title":{"rendered":"Canon To Introduce New HD Video Format&#8230;And Camera"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>For the past few years, Canon has delivered many innovations in both the consumer video market and DSLR video market. \u00a0But their professional video cameras have pretty much been left untouched. \u00a0That&#8217;s about to change.<\/p>\n<p>They are currently developing a new, professional HD video camera. \u00a0It will be file based (meaning no tapes). \u00a0And the interesting part is, they have also developed a new video codec for this camera (a codec encodes and decodes video).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Why is it interesting?<\/strong> Well, it&#8217;s because in the world of video and codecs, there are two big ones. \u00a0First there is MPEG-2. \u00a0This is an older codec. \u00a0All video you see on DVD is MPEG-2. \u00a0Tape based video cameras usually shoot MPEG-2 video. \u00a0It&#8217;s very easy to work with in video editing software.<\/p>\n<p>And then there is MP4. \u00a0This is the newest codec. \u00a0It&#8217;s also referred to as H.264. \u00a0All video you see on Blu-Ray is MP4. \u00a0Almost all new video cameras use MP4. \u00a0It produces fantastic images at very small file sizes. \u00a0But it can also be a nightmare to edit this footage.<\/p>\n<p>Which leads us back to Canon and their new codec. \u00a0It&#8217;s MPEG-2. \u00a0<strong>Specifically, a new, Canon version of MPEG-2<\/strong>. \u00a0It can be used to create full HD, 1920&#215;1080 videos. \u00a0It uses 4:2:2 color sampling. \u00a0That means, technically, it produces colors more brilliantly than MP4. \u00a0\u00a0And it can record at data rates of up to 50mbps. \u00a0That&#8217;s over twice the quality of AVCHD video.<\/p>\n<p>Ultimately, all of this means it will produce nicer looking video, without tapes, and without any of the headaches associated with MP4\/H.264 video (hopefully). \u00a0There&#8217;s no word yet on when Canon&#8217;s new camera will be available or what the price will be&#8230;but they are already working with Apple, Adobe and other&#8217;s to make sure popular video editing software will support it.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>For the past few years, Canon has delivered many innovations in both the consumer video market and DSLR video market. \u00a0But their professional video cameras have pretty much been left untouched. \u00a0That&#8217;s about to change.
