A few months ago I did a post about a new DSLR camera from Canon called the 5D Mark II. What was notable about this camera is that it’s a DSLR camera (it’s designed to take still photos)…yet, it can also record high-definition video. Breathtaking high-definition video.
When I did my original post, the 5D Mark II was not yet available to the public. Around a month or so ago it became available (with a price tag of around $3,400 USD) and video footage from this camera has started to trickle onto the web.
So how does the video footage look from this camera when shot from the hands of an average person? Gorgeous. Just take a look below at a random clip I grabbed from Vimeo shot with the Canon 5D Mark II.
But should you consider using this camera to shoot your web videos? While I haven’t yet had the chance to personally test the 5D Mark II, from what I gather, the answer is…maybe. The biggest complaint is that you have virtually no control over the camera whatsoever when shooting video…meaning you have no settings you can tweak. Not to mention there’s no viewfinder and you can only record 10 minutes worth of video.
Or in other words, for the same amount of money, you’d probably be better off getting a pro-qualilty HD video camera from Canon, Sony or Panasonic. Still, you have to agree the footage out of 5D Mark II is amazing:
