Google Wants To Build a 1Gbps Fiber Network To Your Home

G

Google announced plans this week to start building their own high-speed, 1 gig fiber network for Internet access…a network that’s about 20 times faster than the fastest Internet connections currently available to U.S. consumers…and about 100 times faster than the average U.S. Internet connection.

They are not doing it because they want to become the next Verizon or Comcast, rather, it’s because they want to see what innovations can occur…and how user’s behave…when given insanely fast Internet speeds (currently the U.S. ranks about 38th for Internet speed in the world).

And even better, they are openly accepting requests on where throughout the U.S. they should build this network. That means you can say “Hey Google, this is where I live and I want you to build your network here”.

If you want to tell Google this, you have until March 26, 2010 and here’s where you can do it.

And if you’d like more information on Google’s network plans in general, all the details are available on Google’s blog here.
