Sony Releases Update For Vegas Pro 9

Usually when companies release software updates they do it to fix bugs.  However, Sony’s latest update to Vegas Pro 9 (update D) not only fixes bugs, but adds a few nice features too.

First the bug fixes.  There are many of them, but most notable is improved support for importing MP4 files.  Many Flip-style cameras shoot video in the MP4 format and Vegas, in the past, has had issues importing the audio or video from some of them.  With update D, many of these issues appear to be fixed.  To see a full list of the bug fixes click here.

Vegas Pro 9.d has also added several entirely new features.  Of them, 3 jump out the most (to me).  First is a separate white balance filter.  With this new filter (available under the Video FX tab), you simple click on an area of your video that should be white and Vegas automatically color corrects your video for you.  It’s not always perfect, but it comes close, and you can always fine-tune things further.  In short, it’s a big time-saver.

Next is support for closed-captioning.  Now you can add closed-captions (think subtitles) directly into the Vegas timeline.  And finally, you can add multiple layer PSD (Photoshop) files.  While you’ve always been able to use PSD files in Vegas, with this new feature you can add each layer of a PSD file on a separate track in Vegas…allowing you to keyframe the layers individually (just like you can do in After Effects).

The Vegas Pro 9.d update is free to existing Vegas Pro 9 users.  You can get the update here.
