About a year ago, something called an iPad was released. And it didn’t support Flash. Many critics, as well as other tablet competitors, pounced all over this. The argument was that much of the web’s video content is in Flash and wouldn’t be viewable on the iPad. And hey, the argument was valid, because it was true. But it turns out that a huge number of web video producers (myself included) simply switched their videos from Flash to H.264, and made them HTML5 compatible. In fact, roughly 63% of web videos are now using H.264 with HTML5 compatibility, up from just 10% a year ago.
These numbers come from the video portal MeFeedia.com. Over a 12 month period they tracked 30 million videos from 30,000 sites. Here’s a chart that shows just how big…and how fast…the jump to HTML5 compatible videos, using H.264, has been:
