Sony Releases Vegas Movie Studio 11 – Adds Pro Features To Consumer Video Editing Software

S

Last week Sony released the newest version of their consumer-level video editing software, Vegas Movie Studio 11.  And just like they did with their previous release of Movie Studio, they’ve added features that until now were only available in their high-end software, Vegas Pro.

These features, now available in Sony Vegas Movie Studio 11, include stereoscopic 3D editing (you can edit 3D video), the Device Explorer (so you can access footage on an AVCHD camera, from within Vegas) and advanced text/title animation (borrowed from Vegas Pro’s Pro Type Titler, but with an interface people actually understand).

Sony seems to be following a growing trend in the video editing world; packing features in inexpensive software that are normally only found in much more expensive video editing suites.  For example, Avid recently did this with Avid Studio, Apple’s new Final Cut Pro X (with a substantially reduced price) is rumored to be released next week and U.K based FXHome is set to release HitFilm, which blends video editing with special effects usually only found in Adobe After Effects.

You can get the full details on the new Sony Vegas Movie Studio 11 here.  Upgrade prices start at $65, with full package pricing ranging from $95 to $125.

  • I just want you to know that I love getting the updates. Seeing the new stuff presented by you takes a lot of the guess work out of product planning. Looking forward to future boot camps!

  • I thought your review of Avid Studio was exceptional.

Does Avid Studio also have an equivalent,”Device Explorer (so you can access footage on an AVCHD camera, from within Vegas)”?

I have Sony Studio HD Platinum 10 and it will not recognize my Canon HF S100’s SD card. To do so would be worth an upgrade.

  • Curious to know how Sony Vegas compares with Power Director 9..(PD9)? I just bought PD9 based on a pc Mag review. Does Web Video University use or recommend PD9? Thanks!. Mainebob

  • Hi, Dave,

I’m going through your WVU course now and just noticed this blog post. Do you think I should still go ahead and get Sony Vegas Pro 10 or will the new Sony Vegas Movie Studio 11 be sufficient for most users needs. I’m not a pro by any means. Just looking to do some cool videos for my wife’s website. I do want animated backgrounds, green screen effects, multiple video tracks (like less than 10 though) and good text effects.

Just trying to save $400 if I can.

    Thanks for your input!
