In a previous post, I talked about how one of the best ways to make money with web video is to produce educational or “how to” videos.
For those of you who have taken my training, you know I also stress quality content and production value…as well as building an audience (rather than using spammy techniques in an attempt to get quick traffic through video).
Well, Kip Kedersha is the perfect example of all of these things in motion. You see, Kip produces how-to videos and puts them on video sharing sites. In particular, video sharing sites that share their advertising revenue with content producers (like Metacafe and more recently YouTube).
How well has Kip done? Well, he’s earned $120,000 doing this over the past two years.
Part of Kip’s secret is that he focuses his videos in a tight niche; how to do cool stuff with gadgets and technology. For example, how to turn a flash light into a laser, how to turn traffic lights green with magnets, how to hear through walls and more. All told, Kip has produced about 90 videos.
As an added bonus, because of the popularity of his videos, he has also been contracted by large companies to produce their videos. Not bad for one guy with some ideas and a video camera, huh?
But the big lesson here…again…is the formula Kip uses with web video. He sticks to a niche. He targets education. He provides quality content. He has consistent production value. And he builds an audience.
Do these things religiously and you’ll have success with web video. It won’t happen overnight. And it won’t happen if you play with it for two weeks and then quit. But stick to it and you’ll get the rewards.
Or as Benjamin Franklin said “He that can have patience, can have what he will”.
I hope Kip’s story has inspired you…at least a little. I hope it gets ideas flowing in your head. And I hope it gets you to take action on those ideas…because you’ll never have success with web video until you start moving on it.

Absolutely brilliant – It’s great to see how doing the simple things really works – I’m also willing to bet you that Kip’s going to end up on the Today Show or Good Morning America as the ‘Cool Tip’ guy.
Cool stuff!
So he is from FL? We are probably neighbors! LOL
Those are great tips.
Kip’s video’s are excellent, as well as his choice of a niche. “How-to’s” can be addictive. I’d bet you watched ALL 3 video’s above.
I’m just now getting into the use of video’s for marketing our site and this is a great resource for all the little odds & ends anyone would need to know.

Another great post Dave. I friended him on Facebook and we started a dialog on a post I made about making x-rays with scotch tape. So easy to connect.
