Lightworks, pro-level video editing software most recently used for the movie Shutter Island and credited with helping to create films like Mission Impossible is going open-source.
Owned by EditShare since 2009, releasing the powerful Lightworks platform via an open-source license is being done so the product can reach it’s “full potential”. “EditShare has built a reputation for offering open solutions that enhance collaboration. In taking this uncharted path with Lightworks, we follow this same principle,” says EditShare.
Lightworks offers intuitive controls, advance real-time effects, multi-camera editing, support for a wide array of video codecs, and support for third party applications like Adobe After Effects…among many other things. EditShare plans to open an online marketplace where developers can create and sell plugins as well.
Lightworks isn’t expected to be available under an open-source license until the 3rd quarter of 2010. In the meantime, the open-source version is being beta tested by 80 professional video editors. You can learn more about Lightworks by clicking here.
