On August 12th Sylvester Stallone’s new movie The Expendable’s comes out. And they’ve put together a YouTube video ad, the likes of which you’ve never seen before. The ad starts out simple enough with Sylvester Stallone sitting down for an interview. But what happens next is…
Well, you can watch for yourself by clicking here.
How’d they do that? Well, almost the entire page is using a Flash file made to look like a YouTube page. That’s how they did it. As the ad is creating quite a buzz, expect to see more like it. No word yet on whether the same thing could be accomplished with HTML5.

Here are some other takeover ads that have been done in the past:
Wario Land: Shake It (2008) – http://bit.ly/dorfjf
Honda Insight (2009) – http://vimeo.com/4281939
And Then There Was Salsa (2010) – http://bit.ly/bG4Gv3
Okay, that’s way cool. Thanks for turning us on to it.
Dave,
I had to watch this several times – it rocked!!
Imagine being able to do this kind of thing in internet marketing.

Thanks for getting that out to us. I would have missed it and it really does get the mind flowing with marketing ideas that are way outside of traditional.
Thanks again for keeping us in the loop,
Brian
Awesome! Thanks for showing us this!
Awesomeness defined.
What’s most interesting about this is that YouTube allows you to do this much coding on their site. The applications are endless. Does anyone know who I could contact to make this kind of page?
Thanks
Craig
@Craig – A freelance Flash developer on odesk.com, etc.
I saw the Salsa ad a while ago, and a cheese ad.
I had to watch this twice because when a YouTube video starts, I always look at the time to see how long the clip will be. They used the flash to obscure the controls so it looked like a 37 second clip.
I liked the effects but I didn’t like that I couldn’t rewind and watch anything again because the controls were obscured.
Thanks for sharing this!
Yeah..that was pretty cool.
