78% of Mobile Video Is Encoded For Apple Devices

So you want to encode your web videos for playback on mobile devices.  But there are numerous mobile device platforms out there, so which do you choose? Well, according to Encoding.com, 78% of their users are choosing Apple devices.

By comparison, 18% choose 3GP and only 4% choose Android.  These numbers were tallied by what presets Encoding.com users select when encoding their videos.  Keep in mind that Apple encoding presets produce videos that are playable across multiple devices…not just Apple products…which plays into the popularity.

It’s also forecasted by Encoding.com that video encodes for Android devices will increase substantially this year as the Android market continues to grow at a fast pace.  Across the entire web (computer and mobile devices) H.264 continues it’s growth as the most popular overall format, while Windows Media files appear to be on their death bed, accounting for only 1.2% of all video encodes.

  • This seems to be more of a file format issue than a device issue. If all devices can read, it doesn’t really matter what format it is encoded in.
