NewBlueFX is one of the few video effects filter providers for Sony Vegas. And some of their most useful filters are contained in their Video Essentials packages.
These filters integrate seamlessly into Vegas and can be accessed like any other filter through the VideoFX tab in Vegas:

And like any other filter in Vegas, all you need to do is drag the filter on top of any event in your timeline.
But unlike most other filters in Vegas, the NewBlueFX Video Essentials filters have extremely easy to use and intuitive settings that allow you to tweak the filters however you’d like:

NewBlueFX offers two different Video Essentials packages (named 1 and 2). Each contain around 10 different filters for things like green screen, color correction, flash remover, noise reducer, picture in picture and more.
Here’s a look at just a few of these filters in action:

Picture in Picture (with reflection) Before and After

Pixelator Before and After

While all of these things could be done in Vegas without Video Essentials, the idea behind filters is to speed your workflow. In the examples above, all I did was drag the filter to the event on the timeline. Creating these effects manually would have taken considerably longer.
One warning though. Depending upon the footage your working with and the filter you are using, Video Essential filters may eat up a chunk of your computer resources…so don’t expect instant effects previews 100% of the time.
But beyond that, the packages NewBlueFX offer can be well worth the money. To learn more about these packages, click here and here.

Dave, ol’ buddy, is Sony Vegas Movie Studio 9 a reasonable substitute for Vegas Pro 9? Would the NewBlueFX filters work with Movie Studio?
@John – It depends entirely on what you want to do. If you don’t need to use more than 4 video tracks at a time, don’t need to do 3D compositing, don’t need to do masking, want to use basic text and don’t need to ability to modify render settings, then the lower versions of Vegas are fine.
You can see a comparison chart here:

As far as NewBlueFX filters, I believe they work with all versions of Vegas but I could be wrong. It’s best to check with NewBlue.
