Video Tutorial: Using Photoshop-Like Effects In Sony Vegas

V

Sony Vegas has a lot of “hidden” effects buried within it. In fact, with some of these effects, people will swear that the video was made with After Effects or Final Cut…instead of Sony Vegas.

Today I’m going to share with you one of these effects. It’s an effect that’s used quite often in image editing software like Photoshop. But we’re going to do it with video.

And what we’re going to do, is cut out a specific portion of a video clip…and replace it with another clip that looks better. Specifically in this tutorial, we’re going to remove a dull, lifeless, washed-out sky from a clip…and replace it with a vibrant sky that has moving clouds.

How do we do this? It’s all in the video tutorial below. Just click on the image to watch it now (if you’re a Firefox user, you’ll need to be using Firefox 3.0 or above to watch this video):

  • Hi, i’ve been using Sony Vegas for a while now. I recently upgraded from Sony Vegas 7 to Sony Vegas 8 Pro. However, just recently Sony Vegas Pro 8 has started to go funny with me. Everytime I try to open it up it says something about the Active X control not working. It then says something about the scripts not working. If you can and are willing to help me I would greatly appreciate it. I have tried uninstalling in then installing it again but it didn’t work.

    please help me!

  • Thanks for the video.
I have the Sony Vegas Platinum 9 Pro, can you tell me does this not have the mask button you used to allow me to use a free pen to trace around the area to be cut out.
    Regards

    Chez

  • @Ches – If you don’t see the mask checkbox when going into Event Pan/Crop for a clip, then your version of Vegas doesn’t support it.

  • Hi Dave, i just started to use sony vegas and i should say your tutorials helped me a lot. I just want to ask where did you get the moving clouds video/picture you used here? thanks a lot
