Toshiba Introduces Qosmio Laptop That Makes Web Video Look Better

T

Last week Toshiba introduced a new Qosmio laptop that contains a secondary video processing chip and special software designed to make fuzzy web video look better.

It all gets controlled through a plugin for Internet Explorer that automatically detects Flash video…then cleans up that video during playback.

ComputerWorld tested the laptop with videos from YouTube and reports “Edges are sharper, colors are a little richer and brightness and contrast are adjusted so that black areas of screen appear black and not grey…almost as if a layer of something that had been making the video look slightly dull and fuzzy had been removed”.

They also report that the most noticeable improvements occur in videos that are already decent quality, as opposed to videos that are outright bad.

But don’t run out and look for the new Toshiba Qosmio laptop at Best Buy.  You won’t find it.  Right now it’s only available in Japan and has a list price of $3,420.  But this same technology should start to trickle into the U.S. soon.

  • The Qosmio IS available in US already. A friend of mine purchased one about 1-2 months ago. But let me warn everybody that her experience wasn’t at all pleasant. I feel bad because I recommended her Toshiba as I own two Toshiba laptops, one is a Tablet PC, the other a new one with Vista. I never had a problem with them. But for her, it turned into a nightmare.

The Quosmio never worked fine, was defective. Toshiba refused to replace the laptop (I am talking about a laptop she had never used, it came defective out of the box!). But they said, she needed to send it to Toshiba repair center. Can you believe it? She spent lots of money for a NEW product to get a ‘Refurbished’ one for the same price?! After about a month, still there was no laptop. She ended up filing a report with the credit card company in order to get her refund.

    So, be aware….

  • When I tried to log on to my laptop, a box saying “there are not sufficient resources to load” my account with the default something-or-other came up. The message had a timer that was going to close the message, and then when it closed it would not log me on. I couldn’t turn it off normally so I cut the power. When I turned it back on I logged on fine?
I read here Worcester PC but couldnt make sense?
